Our school, your school - the "Gymnasium Meiendorf"
General information about the profile:
For more than 40 years our school has been located in Meiendorf. At the moment there are more than 720 students studying in recently renovated classrooms. The schoolyard is very sunlit and provides lots of activity possibilities and space.
Our school offers a big range of subjects. Therefore it is possible to take Latin as a third language as well as French and Spanish (starting in grade 6). English, German and Mathematics, as main subjects, are very important to us, but we also offer:
natural sciences: biology, chemistry and physics
social studies: geography, history, economics, politics, religious education and philosophy
art, music and drama
and information technology and media studies (ie. film cutting)
At our school you don't just use your head: Physical education takes place in our big, modern, three-field-gym and our big sports field outside (including beach volleyball). Additionally many students and teachers are offering athletic, artistic, technologic or completely different clubs.
Another special offer we have is the bilingual and artistic emphasis. What does that mean?
In specific bilingual classes there are more English lessons and, moreover, certain other subjects taught in English.
In grades 5 and 6 this subject is PE, later on the students can choose biology, history or geography as well. This is a great opportunity for our students to prepare for future requirements and bring them closer to other cultures. To make this work, the staff is trained in both subjects and also developed special concepts, eg. the English speaking history class.
Another important point is the artistic department. In grades 5 and 6 we build up special music classes in which every student learns how to play an instrument. In these orchestra classes you can then hear music being played with enthusiasm and joy. There are drama groups on every class level and time and again we are surprised by exciting art projects.
We are the only school in Hamburg that offers bilingual music classes. In these classes all the students play instruments and listen to the teacher in English.
But of course, our focus is not limited to special classes:
In the orchestra, the concert-band and our choirs, students of all grades perform music.
We also offer particular media classes, in which semi-professional films are made and then cut on computers. Our students have already won several prices with these movies.
For exceptional students we provide extra challenges like the "maths-olympics" ("Mathe-Olympiade").
Wide offers of tutoring in German, English and mathematics help all the students to "keep on track".
Several activity clubs, like chess, sports and art, are organized by elder students to give all students the opportunity to live out their creativity and energy.
In part of different "Model United Nations" events, we give our students the opportunity to travel through Europe as UN-Ambassadors representing different countries at conferences held in English language.
But all the aspects mentioned about our school are just a mere glimpse of all the activities we present. Left to mention are our school festivals, sports competitions, class trips and of course the international exchange programmes.
From Monday to Thursday over a hundred mothers and fathers of our students work in our school kitchen as volunteers to cook healthy food for a reasonable price for our students. Energy for the long days at school!
